5 Times You’re Reminded You’re An Adult

1. When the bills come rolling in
Electricity, credit card, water, rent, phone–you know you’re an adult when you start to pay for Your own bills. It’s probably the most heart-breaking part of adulting that makes you really appreciate those days when you’d still get allowance and the only expenses you have to worry about are the fun ones–like travel and out-of-town trips.
2.When you have to fit domestic duties into your schedule
That pile of laundry isn’t going to wash itself. And dinner, unfortunately, doesn’t magically appear on the table in the same way that dirty dishes no longer just magically re-appear squeaky clean. Yup, when your mother or your yaya is not around, you have to do every single chore in your rented apartment. Sometimes, you even have to opt out of some leisure time with friends to do laundry or you schedule your lakad according to your domestic duties.
3.When you have to worry about saving and insurance
It’s easy to say, but you have to save and you know it. Yet, it feels like a mammoth task. It’s one of those reponsibilities that you know you need to be putting more attention to, like cleaning your place, but you somehow just can’t do it. But when you finally get yourself to do it, it feels exactly like the huge accomplishment that it is, like surviving a trip to the dentist.
4.When you start seeing your friends settling down
Oh, god. All those pictures on Facebook and Instagram–of people getting engaged, getting married, and having babies. It’s the end and the beginning of an era when your feed starts to get filled with images of diamond rings and ultrasound prints. There’s also the occasional images of houses and condos newly acquired by some of your friends that make you question your choices in life. You know, if #wanderlust and #OOTD are really worth it.
5.When your idea of a great night is staying in
Sometimes, being an adult means stepping into tita/tito territory. This is because you start to realize the more important things in life–like sleep. In fact, for some this is the highlight of every night. During weekends, you’ll have grand plans of meeting friends, doing errands and maybe squeeze in some exercises only to end up passed out in bed for the most part of the day. But who can blame you? When you’re not slaving away in the office, you’re up late at night deep in a TV series marathon. Those Zs have never been more precious.
